AI That Shops and Pays: How Much Would You Delegate?

AI is moving beyond product recommendations toward shopping and payment on our behalf. The important question is how much control we choose to delegate.

For years, online shopping has meant searching, comparing prices and reading reviews ourselves. An AI shopping agent could turn those steps into a conversation about what we need.

From finding products to making purchases

Agentic commerce describes systems that can act on a shopper’s instructions. Comparing products is one task; authorizing a purchase is another. A useful assistant needs clear limits for both.

A forecast for 2030, not today’s adoption rate

In a report announced on 8 September 2026, Mastercard and contributing futurists forecast that more than 300 million online shoppers could routinely use AI agents to shop and pay by 2030—more than one in ten online shoppers. This is a prediction, not a count of current users.

FIM perspective: who makes the final choice?

If an assistant selects what we see, the shopping experience changes before a payment happens. We may save time, but we also need to understand why a product made the shortlist. Was it the best match for our request, or simply the easiest option for the assistant to find?

For a retailer, clear information about price, stock, delivery and returns becomes part of that conversation. For a shopper, the practical question is whether the recommendation respects the original budget and priorities.

What would you delegate?

Imagine asking for well-reviewed running shoes within a fixed budget, delivered before the weekend. Letting an assistant prepare a shortlist feels different from letting it spend money without another check.

Our editorial view: begin with comparison, check the final price and seller, and keep purchase approval explicit. Availability and payment features vary by service and market; this story does not mean autonomous checkout is universally available.

Where would you draw the line: recommendations, comparison, purchase—or payment?
